Dumpster Diving

In the essay of Lars Eighner, On Dumpster Diving. Eighner chose to retain the present tense even though he was no longer homeless when the essay was published. I believe that he decided to preserve the present tense to tell the story of dumpster diving as he was living it. This was done to grab the reader's attention and keep it so that we don't become bored with it. We can relate if we have went dumpter diving or seen it being done. We also know that some people are wasteful of what they have thrown away because Eigher being the dumpster diver has made a living off of what he salvaged. This is still true of today, the present. I know, because I too was once a dumpster diver myself.
